About Dr Mitchell
MB BS MSc (Lond), MA (Oxon) MA (Birkbeck), MSc (Surrey), Dip Psych (Open), DRCOG, DFCRH
Teresa Mitchell is a specialist in Menopause and Women's Health and a pioneer of Surrey Menopause Clinic. Dr Mitchell studied Medicine at Oxford University and St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School and subsequently trained in General Surgery and Urology before embarking on a career in General Practice. She was Principal GP at a Surrey practice for 33 years, specialising in all aspects of Women’s Health and Dermatology, including vulval dermatology, and skin lesion management. She also has a MSc in Addictive Behaviour from St George's Hospital Medical School, a MSc in Health Psychology from the University of Surrey and, most recently, a MA in Medical Humanities from Birkbeck, University of London, all with distinction.
Teresa has always been a staunch advocate of menopausal hormone therapy, even throughout the early 2000s when reported findings of the Women's Health Initiative and Million Women Study disseminated fear about hormone related risks of cardiovascular disease and breast cancer, and many doctors were reluctant to prescribe.
Explaining the flaws in the design and interpretation of these research studies, she has been able to support her female patients in their HRT decisions in the face of widespread negative media discourses. Dr. Teresa herself started oestrogen replacement in 2005, despite still undergoing treatment for breast cancer, and has remained on this therapy ever since. Her diagnosis fuelled a particular interest in complex menopause care and, in 2017, she was recognised as a Menopause Specialist by the British Menopause Society. From then on she campaigned for a Surrey-based NHS Community Menopause Service. Although ultimately forced to abandon this project due to lack of funding, she has continued to champion menopause care in Surrey.
Through her extensive background in women's health and menopause, Dr. Mitchell is also experienced in inserting and removing intrauterine devices.
